Theft of Crypto Currency in the Amount of over 88 Million AMD Committed by Means of Computer; For the First Time in Armenia, a Case on Theft of Crypto Currency Sent to Court

Preliminary investigation of the criminal proceeding on theft of over 88 million AMD committed by means of computer by 36 year-old resident of Yerevan, initiated in General Investigative Department of the RA National Security Service and investigated in the RA Investigative Committee, was completed.

On April 25, 2023 the resident of Yerevan O.K. submitted a report in the NSS informing that 129 «Ethereum» crypto currency worth 236,000. USD had been stolen from his crypto currency wallet in unknown circumstances.

Through investigation conducted in the Department of Investigation of Cybercrime and High Technology Crime of General Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the RA Investigative Committee it was found out and grounded that the mentioned theft had been committed by 36 year-old resident of Yerevan.

Particularly, the latter being a computer programmer, on March 19, 2023, by interfering with the computer system in an illegal way, got access to O.K.’s crypto currency wallet, transferred

129 «Ethereum» crypto currency tantamount to 88.303.352 AMD available in the wallet and stole it.

Then for the purpose of cashing out, on March 19 and June 25, 2023 the man transferred 9 and 20 Ethereum, accordingly, to the crypto wallet opened under his name, owned by an American company. He converted a part of 29 Ethereum into DASH, the other part into XRP type of crypto currency and withdrew from the account.

He first transferred the converted XRP crypto currency to the crypto currency wallet of the company «Binance» opened under his name through 3 transfers, and from there to both Armenian and foreign accounts.

Charge was pressed against 36 year-old resident of Yerevan according to the Point 3 of the Part 3 of the Article 257 of RA Criminal Code.

Detention was chosen as a pretrial measure against him which later was replaced by home detention for two months’ term, as well as mortgage in the amount of 15 million AMD.

In the course of preliminary investigation the accused completely recovered the damage caused.

Preliminary investigation was completed and the materials of the proceeding with the bill of indictment were sent to the prosecutor for approval and referral to court.

The above-mentioned is the first case on theft of crypto currency to be sent to court.

Note; Everyone charged with alleged crime offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law.
