Heavy bodily damage caused prisoner’s death; preliminary investigation completed

Preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated on death of the prisoner A. Goharyan in “Kosh” penitentiary was completed in General Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the RA Investigative Committee.

In the result of comprehensive investigation of circumstances of the case it was found that the prisoner’s death was caused by the bodily damage inflicted by another prisoner.

Through the evidence obtained by preliminary investigation it was found that the prisoner A. Mkrtchyan, who had been sentenced to nine years imprisonment on December 18, 2008, served his term in “Kosh” penitentiary of the RA Ministry of Justice.

A. Mkrtchyan, being sure that A. Goharyan had stolen several domestic items from his lodgment, with the purpose of punishing him as a “criminal authority”, on May 19, 2014 from 23:00 to 23:30 deliberately hit several parts of A. Goharyan’s body and the apical part of his head with a stick. As a result, heavy damage dangerous for health - open blunt cranial trauma was inflicted to the latter. A. Goharyan was taken to the medical center of the same penitentiary where he died of the damages on May 20, 2014 at 03:40.

On the base of the evidence obtained during pretrial proceeding charge was pressed against A. Mkrtchyan according to the Point 14 of the Part 2 of the Article 112 of RA Criminal Code (infliction of willful heavy damage which by negligence caused human death).

The criminal case with the bill of indictment was sent to the prosecutor supervising the legality of preliminary investigation.
