Preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated on organizing the escape attempt of the convict by using weapon from “Armenia Medical Center” CJSC was completed in General Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the RA Investigative Committee.

It was earlier informed that on October 2, 2017 the convict serving his term in «Artik» penitentiary of the RA Ministry of Justice D. Galstyan accompanied by three employees of “Artik” penitentiary was taken to the vascular surgery department of «Armenia Medical Center» CJSC from where he escaped. Through preliminary investigation sufficient factual data were obtained on the allegation that the escape had been planned.

Thus, pursuant to the evidence obtained in the result of necessary investigatory and other procedural actions the convict D. Galstyan serving his term in “Artik” penitentiary reached a prior agreement on organizing his escape with his acquaintance – Yerevan resident, born in 1988. In order to undergo medical examination on October 2, 2017 the convict was taken to the vascular surgery department of «Armenia Medical Center» CJSC accompanied by three employees of “Artik” penitentiary. The convict had told his acquaintance in advance that he would be taken to the medical center for medical examination and gave instructions on organizing his escape. On the same day at about 15:00 the acquaintance of the convict entered the room of the mentioned ward with a sport bag and in order to organize D. Galstyan’s escape took the rifle out of the bag and fired towards the employees of the penitentiary with the purpose of killing them. Deputy Head of Security Division of the penitentiary A. Maruqyan managed to neutralize the armed person immediately after the first shot. 

Taking advantage of the situation the convict, using violence against the employee of penitentiary, stole the rifle of “Makarov” model and fired shots with the purpose of killing the employees of penitentiary. However, the same employee managed to impede the convict to fire sharp shots then neutralized him taking back the rifle. The convict escaped and was pursued by two employees of penitentiary. He was caught at the entrance with the help of security officer of the medical center and his escape was prevented.

On the base of the sufficient evidence obtained during pretrial proceeding charge was pressed against the convict according to the Points 1 and 2 of the Part 2 of the Article 34-104, the Part 1 of the Article 235, the Point 3 of the Part 3 of the Article 238, the Points 2 and 3 of the Part 2 of the Article 34-355 of RA Criminal Code.

Charge was pressed against the man, born in 1988, according to the Points 1 and 2 of the Part 2 of the Article 34-104, the Part 1 of the Article 235, the Points 2 and 3 of the Part 2 of the Article 38-34-355 of RA Criminal Code. Detention was chosen as a pretrial measure against the latter.

Preliminary investigation was completed and the criminal case with the bill of indictment was sent to court.

Note; Everyone charged with alleged crime offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law.
